tour DESCRIPTION

Taking part in a road cycling race in Italy is certainly the ambition of many bicycle enthusiasts.

From 01.06 to 08.06.2020, as part of a cycling week in the north of Tuscany, you will have a chance to make this wish come true.
For muscle training and geographical preparation –  during the days before the Gran Fondo – you can follow our perfectly organised road cycling routes (with GPS-Tracks+signposting).

The Gran Fondo Montecatini Terme is waiting for you with routes 66 km long and 500 m altitude, 94 km and 1350 m altitude, or 123 km and 2250 m altitude on the last day as the peak of your cycling week. Along the way you will find refreshment points with beverages, fruit and local produce … and after all that cycling, of course, there will be our traditional Pastaparty.

You will be based between Pisa and Florence, in the town of Montecatini Terme. This locality has featured prominently in the Road World Championship and in several stages of the Giro d’Italia, as well as having staged numerous local road cycling events.

Due to its geographical position, Montecatini Terme is the ideal starting point for multifaceted excursions. From a landscape perspective, the northern part of Tuscany is extremely varied; the routes we have chosen for you include both the typical hilly areas with their cypresses, pinewoods, olive
groves and grapevines, as well as the more rugged natural areas at the foot of the Apennine range.

This tour also includes the hill range of Montalbano, training ground for the winner of the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France Vincenzo Nibali, through the wine production area around the medieval town of Montecarlo; you will be visiting the charming town of Vinci, hometown of  Leonardo. With the ascent to the “Monti Pisani“ and the quaint ”Svizzera Pesciatina“ landscape, you will also have to tackle more mountainous terrains.

Enjoy this sightseeing tour to one of the most beautiful cultural regions of the world, where the challenges of sport are ideally combined with culinary delights.

Monte Serra / Pisa (about 110 km, about 1200 Hm or about 125 km, about 1200 Hm)

To warm up we will be cycling across the scenic Bientina plain. The mountain range known as “Monti Pisani“ – the most challenging part of today’s tour – can already be seen from a distance. You will reach Pieve di Compito, a village known because of its camellias, and from here there is a climb about ten kilometres long, up to the 900m-high Monte Serra. From its peak there is a breath-taking view of Pisa and the Mediterranean. After the descent, our route leads through the medieval small town of Buti back to the plain and continues across rolling hills back to base.
Without any additional climbing, on the longer route you have the possibility of taking in the town of Pisa, where you will be rewarded by a visit to “Piazza dei Miracoli” and its unique leaning tower.

Vinci (about 75 km, about 800 Hm)

Our “home tour“ leads first of all through flat and then slightly hilly terrain. This unique cultural landscape follows the wine route known as “Strada dell‘Olio e del vino del Montalbano“, all the way to the small medieval village of Vinci, where you can visit the Leonardo Museum and the birthplace of the famous Renaissance artists. Cycling along olive groves and grapevines, the return trip starts with a longer climb which will give you a fantastic, worthwhile insight of the Monti Pisani mountain range and of the Valdinievole.

San Baronto (about 80 km, about 1400 Hm)

The first highlight in today’s excursion is the climb to San Baronto. As part of the World Championship route and having featured many times as a Giro stage, this is a mecca for road cyclists in Tuscany. After quick refreshments, possibly with a tasty “panino“ from the café “L’indicatore“, there is a long descent and finally you will be cycling across the plains around Pistoia, characterized by nurseries and market gardens. A detour to the medieval town centre of Pistoia is definitely worthwhile. Other exciting climbs will lead you to the foot of the Apennine chain. The landscape changes here and the route is increasingly marked by leafy chestnut and acacia woods. The spectacular views of the mountain world of the Apennines and hilly landscapes of Tuscany certainly make the effort worthwhile.

Lucca / Montecarlo (about 90 km, about 1100 Hm or about 75 km, 850 Hm)

To begin with the first kilometres run across the “Padule di Fucecchio“ flatland. Then a slight climb leads to the town of Montecarlo on a small mountain. Your efforts will be rewarded by a winding scenic route, which ends up in the hilly landscape around Lucca. This is where Tuscany shows its well-known traits: old vineyards with cypress-lined avenues, olive groves and grapevines now characterise the landscape. The following ups and down will provide you with charming insights and views over the heart of Tuscany.
With its “Piazza dell‘Anfiteatro”, “San Martino” Cathedral and impressive city walls, Lucca is a truly fantastic highlight. After a short stretch on a plain, you will be cycling along rolling hills back towards Montecatini.
If you wish, you can take a shorter route which is a round trip going only through Montecarlo.

Svizzera Pesciatina (about 80 km, about 1700 Hm)

The final stage begins with the “Giro d‘Italia ascent“ to Vico, which then continues towards the heights at the foot of the Apennines. After a first descent, you will reach one of the intact parts of Tuscany: the picturesque landscape known as “Svizzera Pesciatina“. From the climb which you will have to tackle from here, the gaze reaches as far as the ten medieval villages which stand proudly out of the chestnut woods. An extended downhill stretch will lead you along the river Pescia in the town by the same name, then – after a final ascent – you will get another impressive view of the rolling hills around Valdinievole and of nearby Montecatini Terme.

Feedbacks

See what our customers have been saying!

“The rides were as challenging as described (which was great in our opinion!) Staying 2 nights in each community allowed us time to relax, and enjoy each area. Following the route was surprisingly easy, we just watched for the Silver dollar size directional signs at every intersection. We rented bikes and we were very pleased with the quality. An incredibly beautiful, stress free Tour!”
Joe Segale

“Our cycling trip was beyond our expectations. Starting with a welcome toast to the beautifully planned out route and lovely accommodations. We have already started thinking about our next trip with Giro di Toscana. Raimund, thank you and your team for one of the best trips we’ve had!”
Kathleen Dowd-Hill
