Tuscany: an ideal region for road cycling

The hilly landscape of Tuscany is an ideal region for road cycling. It has the right climate for cycling all the year round, which means that numerous professional teams make the most of these favourable conditions and challenging terrains to get ready for the racing season. Great “campioni” the likes of Mario Cipollini and Paolo Bettini were born in Tuscany and this region in central Italy can rightfully be regarded as the home of road cycling because the passion for this sport is greater here than anywhere else, and in this region you can find the largest number of active cyclists.
The northern area of Tuscany surrounded by the Apennines is included in our tours, as are the flatter terrains on the Tyrrhenian coast. However, most of our routes cover the uniquely charming hilly landscape in the centre and south of this region. Because of local topography conditions, apart from a few longer climbs and flatter stages, our cycle routes are characterised by regularly alternating ups and downs. Most of these routes are on well paved ground, although keeping away from the main roads.
Base 1: Montecatini Terme
The point of departure and arrival for our Tours Classico, Campagna und Stella is the town of Montecatini Terme, between Florence and Pisa. As host of the Road World Championships in 2013, this area has been at the centre of international road cycling events, as well as having hosted several stages of the Giro d’Italia (in 2015 it was chosen once again as one of the stages in the Giro).
Our cycling tours start from Montecatini, heading south, with a new destination every two days. This means that, on a weeklong tour, you get a chance to see a wide range of landscapes in the Tuscan region.
Base 2: Scansano / Maremma
The Maremma is an ideal region for road cycling. There are roads with little traffic and its terrain includes hills, mountains as well as flat stretches along the coast which makes for the most interesting possible topography for a cyclist. Alongside typical rural areas, on our routes you will find numerous medieval villages, perfectly suited for a pleasant break.
Our Partner in this area is the “Hotel Antico Casale di Scansano”. It is the departure point and destination, ideally located on the Tuscan hills and offering all comforts. https://www.anticocasalediscansano.it/
